OSCARS 2023 THE TRIUMPH

FROM "EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE"

The 95th Academy Awards opened Sunday, March 12 in Los Angeles, with a flight over Hollywood, a nod to Tom Cruise's "Top Gun". But it's another film that has won a wave of golden statuettes.

The wave "Everything Everywhere" had been announced for weeks.

The film, which tells the adventures of Evelyn, an overworked laundromat owner suddenly summoned to save a multitude of parallel universes from an evil force, had dominated all the award shows organized before the Oscars. The crazy comedy, in the running in 11 categories, won the Oscar for best film. The creative duo behind the film, Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, shared the Oscar for best director. On stage, the first thanked his parents for having always supported his crazy side.

"Thank you for not crushing my creativity when I was making disturbing horror movies or evil comedies, or dressing up as a drag queen as a kid," he said.

With its mostly Asian cast, this crazy feature film has become a symbol for Hollywood, often criticized in recent years for its lack of diversity.

"Thanks to the Academy, this is History in motion," said Malaysian Michelle Yeoh, heroine of the film and the first actress of Asian origin to win the Oscar for best actress. Michelle Yeoh has demonstrated throughout her filmography that she can play anything, from the James Bond Girl in "Tomorrow Never Dies" to Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung Sang Suu Kyi in Luc Besson's "The Lady," without forget emblematic supporting roles in "Tiger and Dragon" by Ang Lee, "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Rob Marshall and in the third part of "The Mummy" alongside Brendan Fraser, Oscar winner this evening.

Vietnamese actor Ke Huy Quan, revealed at the age of 12 in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", leaves with the Oscar for best supporting actor for his incarnation of a somewhat clumsy husband with unsuspected potential. "I can't believe this is happening to me. It's the American dream," he said. American actress Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Supporting Actress for her role as a bitter tax auditor.

The film was also praised for its original screenplay and editing, earning a total of 7 awards.

Several Oscars for the pacifist film "In the West, nothing new"

The German film "In the West, nothing new" imposed itself as the other revelation of the evening with four Oscars. The German adaptation of "In the West, nothing new", novelist Erich Maria Remarque's pacifist masterpiece on the horrors of the First World War, was crowned best international film.

"Thank you, it means so much to us," said director Edward Berger, who helmed this third adaptation of German Erich Maria Remarque's masterpiece, the first in Goethe's language.

The film also received Oscars for Best Original Score, Set Design and Cinematography.

Brendan Fraser signed an unexpected return to Hollywood by winning the Oscar for best actor for his powerful performance in the drama "The Whale", by Darren Aronofsky, in which he plays an obese professor recluse and tormented by grief. For its part, "Navalny", which relates the poisoning of the leader of the opposition and Russian anti-corruption activist Alexeï Navalny, was awarded the prize for best documentary.

"Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro", a dark version of the famous children's book set in 1930s Italy, won the Oscar for best animated film.

Among the highlights, stars Lady Gaga and Rihanna each performed the songs they were nominated for.

The public also enjoyed the exuberance of Indian cinema, thanks to a troupe of dancers who set the stage on fire with "Naatu Naatu", the song from the Oscar-winning film "RRR".
