ADAPTATION TO CINEMA BY TAIKA WAITITI

FROM THE INCAL WORSHIP

OF MOEBIUS AND JODOROWSKI

Created by writer-director Alejandro Jodorowsky Franco-Chilean and French artist Moebius in the 80s, the comic world famous "Inca" will be adapted for the first time on the big screen. It is the New Zealand director Taika Waititi, Oscar winner for "Jojo Rabbit", who is working on the adaptation of the famous science fiction.

This project is launched in the wake of the box office success of Denis Villeneuve's Dune, an adaptation of a science fiction classic by Frank Herbert. Jodorowsky had tried to transpose it to cinema in the 1970s. His failure had inspired him ... The Incal.

A series of comics born from the failure of "Dune"

The Incal was in fact born after Jodorowsky's failure to bring the novel Dune to the screen . He entrusts part of the preparatory illustrations to Moebius. After several years of preproduction of this titanic project, Alexandro Jodorowsky is let go by his Hollywood backers. The ideas of this pre-production work give birth to another artistic project, the Incal comic book series.

These plates, published between 1980 and 1988 in the columns of the magazine Métal hurlant, follow the private detective John Difool who accidentally discovers a powerful artefact, named L'Incal. The item is coveted across the galaxy by multitudes of factions. Despite himself, the detective finds himself forced to save the entire universe.

At the controls, the director of "Jojo Rabbit", Taika Waititi.

Touched by the adventures of the investigator, Taika Waititi himself wrote the screenplay for the film, accompanied by his acolytes Jemaine Clement and Peter Warren. An adventure that transformed those who approached it. “It was initially the adventures of an ordinary guy named John Difool, analyzes Farice Giger, boss of Humanoids, then it became something else that transformed everything he touched: its creators, the cartoonists, its publisher Les Humanoïdes Associés and myself, countless readers, writers and directors from all over the world ”.

Alejandro Jodorowsky - 92 - had a say in the choice of director. “When Fabrice Giger presented Taika Waititi's work to me, it seemed obvious to me that it was the right one. I have full confidence in his creativity to give the Incal an astonishing version, both intimate and cosmic, ”he said enthusiastically from his Parisian home.

This masterpiece has influenced the greatest directors of SF such as George Lucas, Ridley Scott or Denis Villeneuve.
